The team had a period of success under Green, led by quarterback Randall Cunningham and wide receiver Cris Carter, but were unable to advance to the Super Bowl.

After Green’s firing in 2001, the team struggled for several seasons, failing to make the playoffs for eight seasons in a row. The team then hired Brad Childress as head coach in 2006, and he led the team to the playoffs for the first time in eight years in 2008. Childress was then replaced by Leslie Frazier in 2010, and the team made the playoffs again in 2012.

In 2014, the Vikings hired Mike Zimmer as head coach, and he led the team to the playoffs in 2015 and 2017. The team had a period of success under Zimmer, led by quarterback Kirk Cousins and defensive end Everson Griffen, but they were unable to advance to the Super Bowl.
